‘Alive does not wait for five years’, this mantra of Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Guru Dr Ram Manohar Lohia made him one of the most successful political leaders in the country. In a small village called Saifai in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, the son of a farmer fought under the most adverse conditions to become the supreme leader of his kingdom. Mulayam’s father wanted him to become a wrestler, but his destiny was sure to be something big. A local leader Nathuram saw the boy with strong intentions and gave him his first chance to enter politics. Nathuram also introduced him to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, one of the most influential leaders of the country of that era. After Lohia came into life, he learned the nuances of politics from former Prime Minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh, and then Mulayam Singh Yadav became a big name in UP politics.
He was also the political successor of Chaudhary Charan. From an English teacher in a primary school to becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, it is the journey of a man who was jailed for 19 months during the Emergency. It is the story of a man who was shot on the day he won his first election. When capitalism and bureaucracy were the main pillars of politics, they came and changed the landscape. It is an inspiring story of a peasant son who became the supreme leader of the state.
